The Consortium‘s employees and suppliers “club” together to help Build Africa
Things went with a swing when one of Trowbridge‘s biggest employers held a charity golf event.
More than 70 employees and suppliers of The Consortium, the UK‘s leading provider to the education and care sectors, took part in the event, which was held for a charity which helps some of Africa‘s poorest communities.
The company, which in the past has raised £50,000 for Cancer Research, has this year selected Build Africa as its chosen charity and to date has raised £8,600 – well on track to reach its target of £25,000 over two years.
More than £1,500 was raised on the day through a combination of sponsorship, raffle, auction and putting competition with prizes including Nintendo Wii, iPods and cases of champagne all being donated by The Consortium and its suppliers.
Many more fund raising events and sponsorships are planned for Build Africa, which works in rural areas of East Africa focusing on providing quality education and business skills training.
The charity golf day was held at the prestigious Park Resort in Wick near Bath and was won by a team made up of The Consortium‘s chairman, David Cox and Logistics Manager Darren Liffen, together with two of the company‘s suppliers, Andy Hayward from Shermond Medical and Steve Cafferty from Luxor.
Melanie Teal, Chief Executive of The Consortium, which employs 250 people in the town, said: “The company has a rich history of charity work of which we are all very proud.
“We are one of the major suppliers to the education sector, so when we heard about the work of Build Africa and its Build a School initiative, which has seen 80 new schools built in Africa since 2004, we naturally wanted to do all we could to help.”
As well as classrooms, Build Africa installs water supplies and provides desks and textbooks. It also helps parents and teachers take responsibility for maintenance and development of the schools.
Future fundraising events planned by The Consortium include more raffles, a quiz night and a sponsored bike ride which will see employee Darren Liffen cycle from Lands End to John O‘ Groats.
Ends 17th November 2008
