Around 120 Deloitte employees set aside their regular work in Bristol - and gave their time and skills to local community organisations as part of the business advisory firm‘s annual Community Investment Day.
Community days provide an opportunity for teams of Deloitte employees to get involved in their local community for a day in the firm‘s time, and this year six community and environmental projects were the beneficiaries.
They include Withywood Community Centre, where Deloitte volunteers helped created a new garden.
Teresa Anstey, development manager at the centre, said: “Our aim is to have the garden, complete with play equipment, open next year but before then, we needed to lay the soil and seed the grass. This is quite heavy work, so it was fantastic that so many people from Deloitte were able to come in and do it for us.”
Meanwhile at Dean Crescent Women‘s Hostel in Bedminster, which provides 21 beds for homeless single women, a team of Deloitte volunteers got to work with paintbrushes.
Lena Pascoe, senior project worker at the hostel, which is run by Novas South West, said: “The volunteers managed to paint four of our residents‘ rooms and as a charity, it is wonderful to have such a large group coming in to help us on the same day. “
Teams of Deloitte employees also cleared undergrowth at Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled in Henbury; did some painting and decorating at Trinity Arts Centre in St. Paul‘s; painting and fencework at Avon Scouts in Almondsbury; and clearance work on behalf of the Gloucestershire Geoconservation Trust, at Huntley Quarry near Gloucester.
The day was organised by CSV Employee Volunteering, who specialise in providing tailor-made assistance with a wide range of corporate volunteering activities.
Simon Cleveland, community investment partner at Deloitte in Bristol, said:
“In times of economic downturn it‘s often an easy decision to reduce investment in areas such as community programmes, but Deloitte‘s commitment to supporting the local community remains a top priority for the firm.”
