STRONG BACKING FOR GREEN AGENDA IN THE WEST

More than 60 delegates attended the latest conference to encourage sustainability organised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the South West.

The seminar organised by the Exeter Association of the RICS is likely to be followed by more events keeping the spotlight on protecting the environment.

Mark Stitson, Kendall Kingscott Ltd, who chaired the discussion at Exeter Racecourse, said the Institution was encouraged by the support.

“This is a massively important subject and it was good not only to see the numbers but also the diversity of the people attending.”

Public and private organisations were represented along with RICS members, building and valuation surveyors and others in the construction business.

Topics included how to design sustainable buildings and improve “green” standards within the industry.

The audience heard from Paul Gregory, Senior Ecologist at Scott Wilson, on the importance of undertaking ecological surveys and Kevin Couling, Principal Sustainability Consultant at Faber Maunsell, gave an address on introducing low and zero carbon technologies.

Brian Murphy, of Green Spec, gave a Green Guide to a House and Nigel Grainge, of the Royal Institute of British Architects, presented a case study of the low carbon housing project at Quay Hill, Exeter.

“This was the second successful event of our sustainability initiative and we plan another in the not too distant future,” said Mr Stitson.
