2008 RICS South West conference will spotlight the options for sustainable growth, regeneration, retailing – and public consultation
Chartered surveyors from throughout the South West will converge on Bridgwater on 4th June to debate how the region can meet its growth plans – for homes, workspace, and future retailing.
The seventh “South West Property Conference” to be organised by the regional board of RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), sponsored by South West Property Review, is timed to follow the public examination of the South West‘s Regional Spatial Strategy on future plans for housing, transport, and workspace, tabled by the Regional Assembly.
Delegates will hear about sustainable growth plans from the South West of England Regional Development Agency, and about the region‘s economic prospects from Professor Peter Gripaios, Head of the South West Economy Centre.
Other speakers will provide updates on regeneration, retail development, public consultation, and zero-carbon development.
The conference, at The Exchange on Bridgwater‘s Express Park, will be chaired by Grant Watson, former RICS South West Chairman.
According to Matthew McKaig, RICS Director for the West of England: “This is a crucial year for the South West. We have a development plan from the Regional Assembly at a time when this region faces a huge housing crisis and the need to adjust its growth and development ambitions to the emerging demands of climate change and new Government policies.
“With almost 9,000 chartered surveyors practising in this region, RICS members will have a direct professional involvement in the realities of how the South West addresses its challenges to provide the homes and workspace it needs in an environmentally sustainable manner – and with increasing public consultation.
“We have taken the opportunity to assemble some of the foremost experts to address the challenges confronting the future economic prospects for the South West”, he added.
