TELECOMS COMPANY TOPS UK PROFITABILITY RANKING

Vectone Group Holding records net return on its assets of almost 1,350  per cent, according to new edition of Jordans‘ “Britain‘s Top Privately Owned Companies”

Telecoms company Vectone Group Holdings Ltd. is officially the private company with the highest profitability in the UK, according to new research.

The London-based firm, which operates one of Europe‘s largest private mobile phone networks, has recorded the highest return on net assets of any UK company.

Wireless solutions group Oval (2074) Ltd., based in Marlow, Bucks, is ranked number 2 in the profitability league table, with Birmingham-based Montague L. Meyer Ltd., which imports and distributes timber and panel products, and manufactures cable drums, at number 3.

The findings are contained in the new edition of “Britain‘s Top Privately Owned Companies”, published by Jordans, the UK‘s biggest provider of professional business services and information to companies and their advisers.

The publication contains analysis of the 10,000 leading private companies, ranked not only in terms of turnover but also according to categories including pre-tax profits, profit margins, profitability, wage bill and net assets.

A company‘s profitability is calculated by dividing a company‘s pre-tax profits by its net tangible assets. For the year ended December 2005, Vectone Group Holding Ltd. had assets of £1.26 million and recorded pre-tax profits of £16.99 million – meaning that profitability was a massive 1,349 per cent.

Meanwhile the figure for the next company, Oval (2074), is 1,196 per cent and for Montague L. Meyer Ltd., 824 per cent. There are two plcs listed in the top 10 – Environmental Property Services plc and TDC Global plc - because they have no official listing on the Stock Exchange.

Geoff Wilcock, Director of Business Information Services at Jordans, said:

“Our research is broken down into several different categories, but profitability is one of the best measures of a company‘s success and the ability of its management.

“Although, perhaps predictably, there are a number of IT-related companies in the list, other sectors such as building services, direct marketing, beer and wine distribution, vehicle hire and crop protection services are represented.

“This suggests that the key to success among private companies is not simply being in the right place at the right time – it is down to good management and entrepreneurial skill.”
