Integral has won a contract worth £260,000, to solve a challenging air conditioning problem for Bhs‘ store in Broughton, Chester.
The store reached temperatures of 28-30 degrees last summer and the existing electrical supply to the shopping centre has until now been inadequate to support an air conditioning system.
Based on its proven ability and 20 year long national contract with Bhs across the country, Integral was invited to take part in a competitive tender to win a contract to resolve the problem.
While the shopping centre‘s commercial property owners had committed to install additional electrical supply and a new sub-station, the successful contract winner would need to provide a viable alternative in two stages, providing air conditioning to the office support areas and the sales floor separately.
The first stage would involve installing air conditioning to the office areas which have different requirements to the shop floor, requiring temperature control for longer periods, as staff occupy the area for more hours each day.
Secondly, air conditioning would be installed across the shop floor but in such a way as to cause minimal disruption and avoiding the peak sales season around Christmas altogether. In both cases, a generator would be installed to provide back up and supply, should the new sub-station fail or not be completed in time.
Integral was successful in winning the contract worth £260,000, which heralded the start of many weeks of careful negotiation with the client, architects, local authority and the property owners to deliver the best solution to the problem.
High specification equipment using green technology, featuring environmentally friendly features and meeting all EU regulatory requirements has now been installed throughout the office support areas. An electrical distribution board has been fitted and a new generator is in place ready to provide electrical supply throughout the entire spring and summer, should it be necessary.
Essential deadlines have been met and the store was able to operate as necessary during its peak sales period. Work will begin shortly to install air conditioning throughout the entire sales area.
Phil Dodson, Integral‘s Regional Director says: “This has been a challenging project as there were many restrictions on the site and it has involved careful negotiation to resolve the issues to all parties‘ satisfaction.
“Our team has worked in close partnership with all concerned to address the issues and provide satisfactory and cost effective solutions.
“Having completed the first stage on time and to budget we are confident of completing the second stage within the timescales, ensuring that Bhs staff and customers enjoy a cooler environment this spring and summer”.
ENDS 24th January 2008
