WEST COUNTRY STONEMASONS WIN COMMENDATION AT NATURAL STONE AWARDS 2006

Wells Cathedral Stonemasons has been recognized for its skilled work restoring a listed bridge in London.

Wells Cathedral Stonemasons has been awarded a commendation for its craftsmanship by the Stone Federation, the official Trade Association for the Natural Stone Industry, at the Natural Stone Awards 2006.

The Cheddar-based stonemasons were called in after a powerful sports car hit and badly damaged the Gloucester Gate Bridge at London‘s Regents Park.

The Westcountry stonemasons were commissioned to restore the historic Grade II listed bridge, which featured an intricate rose flower pattern, to its former glory.  To carry out the work the firm sourced red sandstone from Locharbriggs in Dumfries, Scotland.

Judges at The Natural Stone Awards commented that it was good to see that Camden‘s local authority was setting standards for others to follow by commissioning skilled traditional specialists like Wells Cathedral Stonemasons, adding that the work demonstrated ‘outstanding craftsmanship‘.

Peter Arkell, the company‘s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to have our work recognised in this way.  Our skilled craftsmen work to an exceptionally high standard, delivering quality work of this nature whether for new build or restoration and conservation projects across the country.

Wells Cathedral Stonemasons was formed in 1984 following the restoration and conservation of the west front of Wells Cathedral. The company is now one of the country‘s leading specialists in stonework for restoration and new-build projects throughout the UK and overseas.   The company is also a national leader in preserving ancient stonemasonry skills, by providing full apprenticeship training.
