Hand baggage restrictions are being relaxed at Cardiff International Airport from tomorrow FRIDAY.
In line with other UK airports, passengers at Cardiff will still only be allowed to take one piece of hand luggage on a flight but the maximum size permitted will increase.
Musical instruments will also be allowed through airport security in a separate case, but otherwise the airport is keen to stress that other hand luggage restrictions remain in place.
A total ban on hand luggage was initially introduced immediately following the discovery of an alleged terrorist plot in August, but this was then relaxed so that passengers were allowed to carry a laptop computer-sized bag.
Now, from tomorrow, the new size limit for carry-on luggage will increase to 56cm x 45cm x 25 cm (22in x 17in x 9in) - the size of a small roller-suitcase.
Electrical equipment continues to be allowed on board, but must be removed for screening.
Graeme Gamble, Director of Operations at Cardiff International Airport, said passengers should be aware that restrictions on liquids remain firmly in place.
He said: “I am confident our passengers will welcome the relaxation on hand luggage size from tomorrow, but the main point to stress is that this has not been extended to the carrying of liquids, gels and toothpastes. However solid lipsticks are now permitted but liquid lip gloss is still not permitted.
“It remains the case that all liquids are banned except essential medicines and baby milk and baby food, after they have been tasted by the passenger.
“As before, it is important that passengers make themselves aware of the new rules before they get to the airport in order to avoid being turned back from security with the wrong size of bag or inappropriate items. Ensuring they know what they can take will ensure we avoid any delays or inconvenience.
“Those passengers travelling today THURSDAY are reminded that current security restrictions still apply. Our passengers have adapted positively to the changing security situation and we would like to thank them again for their continuing co-operation.”
ENDS 21st September 2006
