Spire Bristol Hospital, The Glen

SPIRE BRISTOL HOSPITAL, THE GLEN SET TO UNVEIL NEW £10.5m EXTENSION

Work due to be completed in September

A new £10.5 million site extension is set to open at the South West‘s largest private hospital by autumn 2009.

Spire Bristol Hospital is already a national centre of excellence for cardiac, brain and spinal surgery. There are currently around 280 consultants practising at The Glen.

But the extension project, which is due for completion in the autumn, means that existing services such as cardiology, cardiac surgery and orthopaedics will also be expanded.

Meanwhile a state-of-the-art operating theatre will also be added to the site, bringing the total to five.

The extension at Spire Bristol Hospital will provide:

• major investment in new surgical and diagnostic equipment
• the redevelopment and expansion of theatre recovery
• reconstruction of the intensive care unit at Spire, which is the only private hospital in the South West and Wales to offer this facility
• a new diagnostic cardiology unit
• a total re-fit and expansion of the outpatient‘s department, increasing the number of consulting rooms from 16 to 21
• an internal refurbishment including 13 new patient bedrooms
• improved parking and access, with 29 new car parking spaces, six disabled parking spaces and additional cycle and motorcycle parking areas

“This is an important step forward in the improvement of healthcare facilities in Bristol and the South West, and will cement and enhance our position as a national centre of excellence,” said hospital director Rob Anderson, who recently announced the results of an audit showing zero cases of bloodstream MRSA and c.difficile infection at Spire Bristol Hospital since records began.

“In just a couple of months‘ time the region will have a new flagship hospital and I believe it speaks volumes that we are making such a major financial commitment in the depths of a recession.

“In addition to all of the benefits the extension will bring, it will also allow us simply to make more efficient use of our space, improving the general environment for both patients and staff.”
