Louise Daniel has been appointed matron at Spire Bristol Hospital, the South West‘s largest independent hospital.
She assumes the role after more than 20 years at the hospital, during which time she has also worked in the IVF and outpatients departments, been an endoscopy specialist nurse, clinical services manager, physiotherapy manager, theatre manager and deputy matron.
The mother-of-three, who also has the title head of clinical services, grew up in North Somerset and completed her nurse training at the former Winford Orthopaedic Hospital before embarking on general training in London.
“Far from being purely ward-based, my role involves acting as an interface with the consultants and providing a strategic overview for the hospital,” said Louise Daniel.
“I now have an additional role involving infection control, with responsibility for ensuring that the hospital maintains its record of having had no MRSA bloodstream or c.difficile infections among patients since records began.”
Spire Bristol Hospital is a national centre of excellence for cardiac, brain and spinal surgery and is preparing to open a new £10.5 million site extension which will allow it to carry out over 10,000 operations every year.
“The hospital has transformed itself since I first came to work here,” said Louise Daniel. “Its development can be measured in the fact that there were three outpatient rooms when I joined – whereas when our extension is complete, there will be 21.”
Hospital director Rob Anderson commented: “I know our patients really value the reassurance of having a clearly visible, well-known matron on site.
“Louise has worked at the hospital for 22 years, making her one of the longest serving members of staff within the Spire group. She has managed every clinical department within the hospital and I believe this kind of continuity is one of the keys to our success.”
ENDS 11th June 2009
