FLEET HERO ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD FOR INTEGRAL

Sensible approach to fuel management sees cost savings for business and reduced carbon footprint

The UK‘s leading independent provider of comprehensive property maintenance services has received a “Fleet Hero” award from the government for its efforts in lowering carbon emissions.

Integral was given the award from the government‘s Energy Saving Trust (EST) in recognition of its innovative fuel management programme which sees the company use nearly 3,000 litres less of fuel a week despite its fleet of vehicles increasing by a third in recent years.

In 2006 Integral‘s fleet of about 1,000 vehicles was rapidly expanding along with the business so fleet professional Craig Watson was appointed to oversee the entire operation.

He said: “After we‘d identified fuel management as being a key issue affecting the company‘s fleet and its carbon footprint we embarked upon a huge fuel data gathering exercise to generate benchmark information.

“This produced several key points, including fuel spend by individual drivers, where fuel was being purchased and the individual drivers who were buying the most fuel.”

To bring its fuel spend down Integral has introduced nation-wide mobile phone text alerts for its drivers to encourage them to fill up in the lower cost outlets, like supermarket, and to be more aware of how much fuel they use.

“Drivers are now aware they are being monitored and have become more responsible,” said Mr Watson.

“Drivers are more watchful in their fuel purchasing habits and although there is no formal incentive scheme drivers have become competitive between themselves because they don‘t want to be highlighted by their branch manager for being on any ‘list‘.”

He added: “By asking our drivers to be more responsible about their fuel use we have been able to deliver significant financial savings to the business which has also lowered our carbon emissions and subsequent carbon footprint.

“Our focus is on saving money while ensuring the fleet runs efficiently and effectively to support the operation of the business. We have already achieved significant cost savings and with the Energy Saving Trust‘s help we will achieve even more.”
