The latest development at Northcliffe Media South West is that Torbay‘s Herald Express ceases to be an evening newspaper and will become a weekly from 21st July.
It will be published on Thursdays, with expanded content of up to 100 pages.
This is exactly what happened last year with the Bath Chronicle - and other evening newspapers in smaller towns/cities around the country are likely to go the same way.
While it is sad (ie, the Herald Express has been a daily since 1925), the experience in Bath and elsewhere (eg, the Birmingham Post) suggests that it will strengthen the readership and viability of the title. We would not be surprised to see Northcliffe make similar decisions for the Express & Echo in Exeter and the Citizen in Gloucester in the months ahead.
For Torbay companies, this is potentially good news. These expanded weekly titles typically have reduced editorial staff numbers, so there is greater pressure on them to fill those pages.
